Moo Duk Kwan translates to "The Institute of Martial Virtue." It is the organizational body for Soo Bahk Do, encompassing the philosophical aspects which define our art.

Established on November 9th, 1945 by our late founder, Grandmaster Hwang Kee, following the liberation of Korea from Japan after World War II, his unique art combined kicking from Korean Taekyon, postures and philosophies from Chinese Taiji, forms and techniques from Japanese Shotokan, and techniques and philosophies he discovered in the ancient text, "Moo Yei Do Bo Tong Ji." Moo Duk Kwan (also known as Tang Soo Do at that time) quickly became the most widely practiced and highly revered traditional martial art in Korea.

Despite hardships that befell the Moo Duk Kwan, such as political pressure from the Korean government to unify with Tae Kwon Do, Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee endured and trained diligently, ultimately exporting the Moo Duk Kwan system to the U.S. from 1958 onward through servicemen returning from active duty in Korea. The most famous American promoter of Tang Soo Do in those establishing days was Master Carlos "Chuck" Norris.

Master H.C. Hwang, son of Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee, came to the U.S. in 1974 and became the Chairman of the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation's Technical Advisory Committee. Upon his father's death in 2002, he was appointed as the new Kwan Jang Nim of the World Moo Duk Kwan.

Gulf Coast Karate Academy is proud to be a member studio of the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation, founded in 1975. For more details on Soo Bahk Do and its history, read some of the posts linked here or visit the official Soo Bahk Do website here.
